How to Fill Jathagam Correctly

Jathagam, or the Birth Chart, is a snapshot of the celestial bodies at the exact time of your birth. In Tamil culture, sharing an accurate Jathagam (Rasi and Navamsam) is the first and most crucial step in marriage matching. Errors in this chart can lead to misunderstandings or mismatched predictions, so accuracy is paramount.

Understanding the South Indian Chart Layout

The South Indian chart follows a fixed-sign layout, meaning the signs (Rasi) never change position. The counting is always clockwise. The top-left corner is always Pisces (Meenam), the second box is Aries (Mesham), and so on. When filling out this grid, you only need to place the Planets (Grahas) in their respective boxes as per your horoscope. Common abbreviations used are Su (Sun/Sooryan), Mo (Moon/Chandran), Ma (Mars/Sevvai), and Lagna (Ascendant).

Why Rasi and Navamsam?

While the Rasi Chart indicates the general positions of planets and their effects on your body and circumstances, the Navamsam Chart (D9 Chart) is the microscopic view used specifically for marriage and partnerships. Most astrologers will refuse to do a matching (Porutham) without seeing the Navamsam chart. Using this tool, you can generate both simultaneously in a clean, legible format.

Best Practices

  • Double-check inputs: Ensure you are copying from a reliable source like a computerized horoscope or a trusted family astrologer's note.
  • Include Lagna: Never forget to mark the Lagna (Ascendant), usually denoted as 'La' or 'Asc'. It determines the house numbering.
  • Legibility: Handwriting can be hard to read. A digital grid ensures that the astrologer on the receiving end makes no mistakes in reading your planetary positions.
